Elisha T. Minter will offer a Road Scholar Presentation at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Outer Banks on Jan 18, 2020 for the second in the Cultural Crossroads series. Join us for the Second Series of Cultural Crossroads, promoting cross-cultural awareness and diversity in the Outer Banks. The Bread Family Tales is a collection of stories, photos, and foot-stomping music focusing on the daily life and struggles of a family living when Jim Crow laws and racism were prevalent. Storyteller Elisha Minter, affectionately known as “Mother Minter,” narrates the tales from a historical point of view, sharing what life was like in North Carolina for farmers, parents, and children growing up in a time when “sto’ bought bread” was a delicacy. It includes document slides from the actual family home place in Fayetteville, and the actual stories fitted around these locations. The program will be followed by a short question and answer session.
Elisha T. “Mother” Minter is a graduate of UNC-Charlotte holding a BA in African American and African Studies. She has an extensive background in music and theater and currently works at the Beatties Ford Road Library in Charlotte as a Youth Program Specialist and Informational Specialist. She is also the Coordinator for the library’s training and storytelling staff development component, Frontline Storytellers, an award winning local and national program.
Mother Minter’s storytelling and theatrical career spans a 22 year period in which time she has performed on stage and in community theater, as well as appeared in films. She appeared in stage productions of “The Wiz”, “South Pacific”, “Show Boat”, and “Proposals”. For the latter, she won Actress of the Year from Creative Loafing in Charlotte, NC in 2002. Her film debut was in the March 2007 release “The Ultimate Gift” starring James Garner.
As a writer, Mother Minter has been featured in Charlotte Pride, Charlotte Magazines and Black Child USA, where she wrote a bimonthly column call “ParentingPoints”. She is presently self-publishing a book entitled Children’s Play Songs from the African American Experience.
The Cultural Crossroads programs are sponsored by the NC Humanities Council, a statewide non-profit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. All events in the series are FREE of charge and Open to the Public.
