Bread lovers should sift through nutrition labels for healthy options - WRAL.com

— Love bread but want something a little healthier?

Consumers have many options to choose from, but savvy shoppers have to know how to sift through the nutrition labels to determine which bread is better.

There are several varieties of bread available to shoppers, including whole wheat, whole grain, multi-grain, organic and rich in fiber that are for sale on grocery stores' bread aisles in the U.S.

According to Consumer Reports magazine, it comes down to one ingredient: the flour used to make the bread.

“All bread is made with flour, which is ground down grain," said Amy Keating, a nutritionist for Consumer Reports. "The healthiest flour is 100 percent whole grain flour. Shifting your diet towards more whole grains can protect against chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer.”

That means consumers shopping for the healthiest bread options should look for bread made with 100 percent whole grains or 100 percent whole wheat.

That means the flour was derived from the entire grain kernel while still possessing all of the healthy ingredients like antioxidants, Vitamin B, fiber and other nutrients.

“You should be wary of claims (about bread ingredients) like multi-grain or 21 grains," Keating said. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that the main ingredient is a whole-grain flour. So, you should flip over that product and look at the ingredient list to make sure whole grains is at the top of the ingredient list.”

If bread comes with a seal that says “USDA Organic,” that means it was made with at least 95 percent organic ingredients and the grains weren't grown with potentially harmful synthetic pesticides.

Shoppers should also look for a label that says “good source of fiber,” a key ingredient that helps keep the digestive system moving while making people feel fuller longer.
