Fresh bread is a highly-coveted delicacy in Hudson County. Out of towners and once locals hail to Hoboken and Jersey City as local residents also do regularly — to delight in the freshly-baked bread that can be found here. Hoboken and Jersey City have quite a few hidden gem bakeries that still make their own fresh bread, each one with something unique and special to offer customers. Plus, many restaurants and eateries in the area get their bread and baked goods from one of these bakeries. And if it’s good enough for some famous local spots and Frank Sinatra, then you know it’s good in our book. Read on to learn more about local bakeries to get fresh bread in Hoboken + Jersey City.
Losurdo Brothers Delicatessen + Bread Bakery {410 2nd Street, Hoboken}
This locally owned family deli and bakery has been serving the Hoboken community since 1975. Danny, Nick, and a few other helping hands make the bread every morning between 2:00AM- 5:00AM — talk about dedication! They bring old school traditions from Altamura Italy, home of the best bread in the world. The Losurdo family is always baking Italian bread, French bread, whole wheat, multigrain, Panella, and of course, their homemade focaccia, which is available exclusively on Saturdays. During Easter time, they also bake the traditional Easter Bread.
Dom’s Bakery {506 Grand Street, Hoboken}
Dom’s has quite a unique story: Opening in another location in 1979 {on 5th between Jefferson + Adams} and then moving to the current location in 1988 when Dom and Flo Castelitto bought 506 Grand, which used to be a well-known bakery in the early 1900s. Dom and his crew begin baking bread every day at 4:00AM, and his Napolitano roots are evident in the recipe and make the bread extra scrumptious. Bread is not the only delicacy offered here, as they also make their own focaccia, pepperoni, and sausage stuffed bread, homemade sauce, sfogliatella, and even Easter Breads. You’ll see Dom’s all over Hoboken as their goods are used in kitchens throughout Hoboken at places like Lisa’s, Vito’s, and Augustino’s, just to name a few.

Antique Bar + Bakery {122 Willow Avenue, Hoboken}
It’s known around town that Sinatra used to frequent Antique Bakery back in the day {see below for the Jersey City location that moved over two years ago}. The Sinatras loved the bread here so much that they came here regularly, as Antique Bakery was their go-to spot for baked goods. Ol’ Blue Eyes would have it sent to him by the suitcase-full, and referred to the bread as “Hoboken Sticks.” Antique’s slew of baked goods can still be seen in the window of this downtown gem, but the OG bakery moved to Jersey City {leaving its recipes behind with the bar — so that you can still get fresh bread}. This century-old spot not only bakes their own bread but also serves as a fully functioning bar and restaurant.
Prato Bakery {201 Washington Street, Hoboken + 371 4th Street, Jersey City}
It’s no surprise that this Italian bakery has become a hit on Washington Street {and has a second original location in Jersey City}. On the menu at Prato Bakery are quite a few delicious Tuscan-style baked goods like focaccia, ciabatta, schiacciata {a type of Italian flat bread}, and much more. Also available are some sweet treats like cantucci {a sweet Tuscan biscuit — you *must* get the chocolate chip}, Pan di Ramerino {soft bread with rosemary + raisins}, Nutella Focaccine, and more. This authentic Italian bakery is a lovely surprise, with big flavor packed into a small space.
