Score a Rosca de Reyes bread today at any of these Long Beach locations - Long Beach Post

Celebrate Epiphany Day like a Mexican Catholic today and pick up a delicious Rosca de Reyes bread considered central to the tradition—you can pitch the baby Jesus figurine or any of the religious aspects without judgment (some of us are lapsed Catholics but will celebrate any tradition that let us continue partying).

The oval shaped sweet bread, decorated with candied fruit, is part of the celebration of Epiphany and the three kings, or wise men, who visited the newborn Jesus Christ. Whoever finds the Jesus figurine in their slice of the bread is traditionally tasked with throwing another party next month (See? The partying never ends). Read more about the tradition here.

You can find the holiday bread at almost any panaderia but beware, they can sell out quick.

Nadia, an employee at Marilus Bakery in Central Long Beach, told me that she worked a 12-hour shift last year during the busy holiday. The business ran out of the large Rosca de Reyes bread quickly, too.

Since the small bakery doesn’t have storage or a fridge, employees have to come in earlier than usual to start baking and serve fresh bread all day.

If you’re interested in purchasing from Marilus, Nadia said you’ll have three options: large for $30, medium for $25 or small for $18. You can also buy by the slice at $1.50.

Marilus Bakery is open until 10 p.m. and located at 1400 Cherry Ave.
